RIO Fitness Chicago® Tip:
Here's SEVEN simple ways to be a healthier & smarter grocery shopper.
1) Stick to the edges & venture strategically into the aisles. The edges of the supermarket are the healthiest food (dairy, produce, meats, seafood). The aisles are junk-food central (processed-food & the nutritional dead zone).
2) Use the self-checkout. The more exposure to temptation, the more likely you'll give in. You’re more likely to buy a candy bar when you’re stuck in a line flanked by candy racks.
3) Frozen fruits & veggies are cheaper & better for you than fresh, because they are flash frozen upon picking so that locks in all of the nutrients that we need.
4) Ask when next shipment is. Most stores receive shipments of fish, meat, produce on certain days of the week. Buy on that day for the freshest product.
5) Shop on less busy day/times. Try to go grocery shopping on Wednesday (slowest day) or after 9pm (slowest time). For the same reason as doing self-checkout.

6) Do NOT shop when hungry. When you're hungry, blood sugar levels plummet, triggering the brain to crave simple high glycemic sugars (breads, pastas, desserts, cookies, candy, soda, etc.) that are destructive to your inner & outer health. So to avoid all that & save from spending unnecessary $, make sure you've eaten before shopping.
7) Shop at stores like Trader Joe's for organic dairy, produce, meats, etc., at relatively inexpensive prices. Thus, avoiding all the harmful pesticides, herbicides, hormones, antibiotics, GMOs, etc., found in the products at other grocery stores that aren't committed to quality, healthy food.
